A roof collects every drop that falls on the house and delivers it somewhere. In expansive clay, the difference between "eight feet out" and "at the slab edge" is the difference between a drainage detail and a foundation problem.
A 2,400 square foot roof sheds roughly 1,500 gallons in a single inch of rain. All of it leaves the roof at the eave line, and without gutters it leaves along the entire perimeter at once, in a curtain.
Deeper soil under the middle of a slab barely changes moisture content. The band around the perimeter does, and that band is what moves the slab. It is also exactly where roof water lands.
Expansive clay soils across much of the county swell when wet and shrink when dry, and the Gulf Coast cycle between multi-year drought and very wet spells drives that hard. Uneven moisture around a perimeter means uneven movement.
Differential movement is what cracks brick veneer in stair-steps, sticks doors and separates trim. A corner that stays wet all winter and bakes all summer is the one that moves most.
The useful conclusion is not "buy gutters." It is that the goal is uniform moisture around the perimeter. Gutters that concentrate the whole roof into two downspouts dumping at two corners can make that worse, not better, if the water is not then carried away. A lot of Houston-area content asserts that the Beaumont Formation underlies everything from the Ship Channel to Rosenberg. That is a reasonable description of the eastern Houston area and it is not a safe blanket statement for Fort Bend County, which is large and geologically mixed — the Brazos runs diagonally across it, and the western county sits on river alluvium and prairie sandy loams rather than the same material as the built-up northeast.
What is safe to say, and what actually matters for a roof-drainage decision: expansive clay soils are present across much of the county, the shrink-swell behavior is real, and the perimeter of a slab is where it shows up. A homeowner who wants the specific soil under their own address can get it from the USDA Web Soil Survey for the parcel, which is more useful than a county-wide generalization either way.
It is mechanical and it is well documented in this region. Expansive clay changes volume with moisture content. The band of soil whose moisture actually changes — the active zone — is roughly the outer 8 to 10 feet around a slab. Roof water discharged at the slab edge lands precisely in that band and concentrates a whole roof plane's rainfall into a few square feet of it. The soil there swells, then shrinks hard in the next dry spell, and the slab follows.
Past the active zone, which in practice means a target of eight to ten feet from the slab, onto ground that falls away from the house. An extension, a buried solid line to a pop-up emitter, or a splash block plus positive grade all work. A downspout ending in a splash block sitting on ground that slopes back toward the house is the common failure and it is worse than no gutter at all, because it concentrates the water instead of spreading it.
Plenty of houses here have none, and on a property with real fall away from the slab and deep eave overhangs that can be defensible. On a zero-lot-line house in a 2000s subdivision, with three feet between the wall and the neighbor's fence and no fall to speak of, it is not. The question is not gutters or no gutters, it is where the roof's water is currently going.
Twice a year at minimum, and the second one matters more than people expect. Live oaks in Fort Bend County drop leaves in spring, not fall, and crepe myrtle and pine debris arrive at other points in the year. A clogged gutter overflows at the fascia, which rots the board, wets the soffit and gives rodents an entry route into the attic — which is its own chain of problems.
